Well, I never really left. I just got caught up in stuff. Did the Lousyana trip over Easter (click HERE for the Easter 2008 Flickr photoset). Visited Dada and it was as pleasant as seeing one's 91 year old grandmother in a nursing home can be. Saw other relatives on Easter Sunday too, and though I know people will say I'm going to Hell for saying it, I'm damned glad I didn't have to see the one or two racist relic fuckers who still insist on peppering the N-word through their everyday conversation (honestly, it's bad enough when I have to hear it but it makes me downright angry when it's said around my kid. I just resent being forced to have that conversation with her, esp. by a member of our own family. Sickening.).
Good thing I don't believe in Hell.
My parents were on the lookout for a house to retire to while they were down there as well and found one place that piqued their interest. But then they're also looking at places in Mariposa and San Lorenzo valley as well. So they may wind up a little more local. I'm hoping for that. I'd like to see them more than once a year, and I just don't know if we'd be able to get to Louisiana more often that that due to financial constraints.
Came back with a miserable cold that forced us into quarantine for a full week. Correction: a disgusting, miserable cold. Seriously. It was gross. 'Nuff said. We're better now.
We've signed Julia up for a brand new charter school that's opening up in September called South Bay Prep. Went to the enrollment meeting this past Wednesday to hear what they had to say and were happy to sign her up. Julia, on the other hand, was bored to tears because of course the meeting presentation format was primarily for adults, but the kids DID get excited about the idea of being able to be part of the shaping of the school, and especially its extra-curricular activities. Anyway, we'll find out if she's enrolled after May 5th. If less than the maximum number of students per grade apply before May 5th, all will be enrolled, and that will include Julia. If more than the maximum apply, it'll go to a lottery, and we don't have as good a chance there considering it's outside our particular school district. And that will suck cuz we're already excited about it.
This week, Julia will be taking a week-long "spring-break" cooking intensive: 3 hours a day, every day. Otherwise known as bliss-on-a-freakin'-plate for both of us. She gets out of the house doing her favorite class, I get me-time, which I get precious little of these days. Though I guess if she goes to a charter school, that will change. Sniff. :(
Topamax is working quite well and I'm having very few migraine symptoms these days. As a result, I'm looking at gearing up my freelance again. Just ordered a MacBook Pro for the occasion in fact. Should arrive early this week. Mwuahahahahahaha! New gear dance! New gear dance! Tralalalalalala! (hi, I'm a geek)
Spent today watching a movie Chris knew but I'd never seen called Topkapi and then tearing apart, sweeping and redesigning our back patio. Lots more work to do on that but a good start and it was nice not to be stuck indoors. Gorgeous, gorgeous weekend.
I've been tagged by 2 different friends in recent weeks but am not up to addressing said tags now so I'll use those as excuses to get my ass back here in the next few days. By any means necessary, and all that jazz.
Speaking of All That Jazz (quite possibly my favorite movie of all time...well, one of them...), Roy Scheider passed while I was off playing. I'll miss you, sir.

1 - "All That Jazz" freakin' ROXX (as much as a jazz flick can).
2 - Cooking class? FUN. I'll see what I can find in the way of nifty recipe books while we're overseas. :)
3 - Sorry about the fam being stuck in a time warp. At least you don't have to deal with them on a regular basis.
4 - Hope your parents go to Mariposa. Wonderful town! We have reenactments there.
I've taken the approach of humiliating the Louisiana relatives who use the N word in front of my children. I loudly say to the kids in front of the person who just made that comment "Kids, we do NOT insult, call names or make fun of people just because of the color of their skin. That's called being a racist. Uncle or Auntie SO AND SO should NEVER had said something like that because in our family WE DON'T JUDGE PEOPLE BASED ON THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN! It has nothing to do with how smart they are or what kind of person they are." Then I look pointedly at my relation while they apologize and back track. lol.
Yeah, well, the problem with the relative in question is that they wouldn't backtrack and apologize. They'd defend their right to call whomever they wanted whatever they wanted and get in my face about being the family weirdo (California artsy-fartsy types...you know we're all N and homo-lovers out here...if he had any REAL idea of the diversity there is out here, it'd kill him. Wait...there's a thought... ;) ).
So, the point is, it'd be thrown in my face and I'd be made the example BY him of THE PROBLEM, and he'd have no qualms about doing it in front of Julia. He's ignorant, plain and simple, and the only approach I can see is to just wait for the fucker to die.
He's a mean-spirited old asshole who'll tear anyone apart behind their back and then smile to their face, and he's always been that way. He's my grandmother's younger brother (the one she dropped out of 9th grade to help care for), though, so he's one of the last of a dying generation so someday he'll take his hatred to his grave. My job until then is to keep that hatred from touching Julia. If the quietest way to do that is to remove her from the room for a while, so be it. Damned happy to do it.
You know, them older folx are more accident prone...shame if somethin' happened...
Hi E! Sounds like you've been busy. Poke in and let the OMM Girls know you are still living!
